Adopting Everest and Building Schools in Nepal

“I have adopted Mount Everest,” states Christine Boskoff, owner of adventure travel company, Mountain Madness, “and I invite others to join me.”

Christine went from being an Electrical Engineering major in college to one of the elite high-altitude women climbers in the world. She has summitted six of the world’s highest peaks: Everest, Lohtse, GII, Shishapangma, Broad Peak, and Cho Oyu. She has guided climbs in Asia, Africa, North and South America, Europe and Antarctica. But the first mountain Christine is adopting is Everest. What began as a climbing expedition, resulted in a life quest to assist the mountain and its people.

“The lure of the big Himalayan peaks including Everest are what originally brought me to Nepal. Each time I came back, I developed more bonding friendships with the Sherpa people. Their warmth, caring and loving hospitality showed me that you didn't need much to show kindness. Living on less than 1 dollar a day, the Nepali family may only send the oldest son to school. There is a need to support education in the rural areas in Nepal, where illiteracy and poor education, especially among women, presents huge challenges. Once you have an education, nobody can take it away. My efforts now include fundraising for new schools, libraries and books in order to meet that need.”

Christine and Mountain Madness will be leading a fundraising climb up Mount Baker in July 2004 to help fund a new school in rural Nepal.
